SMX is seeking an experienced Database Administrator to support a federal law enforcement client by owning the optimization of relational database environments and driving greater efficiency across the current data stack. This role will design, implement, and maintain secure, high-performance SQL-based databases, while enhancing and optimizing ETL pipelines to improve reliability and scalability. The successful candidate will collaborate with data engineers and analysts to ensure consistent, performant, and secure database operations in support of mission-critical analytics.

This is a full-time position requiring on-site work five days a week at a client’s office in Washington, D.C. An active Top Secret SCI clearance is mandatory.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  

  • Own the optimization and administration of relational databases (Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL) to ensure security, performance, and availability.
  • Enhance and optimize ETL pipelines, improving throughput, reliability, and maintainability of data flows.
  • Tune and configure databases for performance as business requirements evolve and upstream system changes are introduced.
  • Implement and manage database monitoring, backup, recovery, and disaster recovery strategies.
  • Collaborate with data engineers and analysts to align database structures with data modeling, analytics, and visualization requirements.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, scalability, and cost-effectiveness of the current database and ETL stack.
  • Support Agile development teams by adapting to evolving requirements and priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Required Skills:  

  • 10+ years of experience in database administration with SQL and relational database platforms.
  • Expertise in relational database administration (Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL).
  • Strong understanding of data management best practices.
  • Advanced SQL skills and demonstrated experience in performance tuning and optimization.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS RDS and AWS Data Migration Service (DMS).
  • Proficiency in ETL pipeline design, management, and optimization.
  • Experience with Apache Airflow or similar data orchestration frameworks.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Business Analytics, Statistics, Engineering, or related field.

Desired Skills/Experience:

  • Experience with Python scripting for database and ETL automation.
  • Experience contributing to long-term database architecture planning and modernization strategies.

$114,600$192,500 USD
